Enable the 21st Century Classroom

Education and technology are two concepts inextricably connected in today's schools. Keeping students engaged is an ongoing challenge for teachers. As an educator, you know that using technology can empower your students. But as more schools allow a Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) option, classroom management can be extremely challenging. And, how do you choose a platform that works across all devices?

At EXO U, we understand your goals and challenges. Integrating the latest technology into education doesn't have to be a painful experience.

We know that as an educator you want flexibility: the ability to choose the technology you will or will not use in your classroom as well as the pedagogy that works best for your students. We want you to be able to maximize the technologies you already have as well as take advantage of the latest in digital and mobile technologies that your students are bringing with them to the classroom.

EXO U offers a simple, intuitive and collaborative environment for teaching students with a range of devices. Our EXO U for Education solution seamlessly manages applications and content across the different operating systems and devices that your students and you use. You have the flexibility to engage students in exciting new ways inside and outside the classroom through a secure environment that respects their privacy. Our solution works on leading technologies found in today's classrooms, and is developed with future technologies in mind. Moreover, EXO U breaks down barriers by providing quality access to course materials with or without an Internet connection. When you choose EXO U, you can focus on what you do best and what you love: engaging and educating students.

Schools that deploy EXO U technology can:

Classroom Management

Our solution helps educators restrict what materials or applications students have access to. Educators can deliver appropriate content and materials effortlessly to students. With offline support, you can be sure your students have access to class materials and assignments and can collaborate with or without Internet connectivity.

Group-Based Learning

Our solution helps educators easily assign students to teams for group-based learning. Students can then work together to research and complete assignments, and are held accountable for coming to class prepared, having read background materials provided by you outside the classroom.

Student interactions

Within the collaborative workspace, our solution allows students to have a safe place to learn and to interact with others. Educators can control whether or not students are able to interact with everyone in the class or just those students on their teams. When assigned to teams, students can comment and share content freely...

With EXO U, you can work with folders, files, and documents using whatever device you have. Sharing files and links with members of your teams is as simple as giving them access rights, including share, edit or view only. No more having to swap USB drives or email files back and forth between team members. Best of all, because the collaborative workspace automatically updates and synchronize updates across devices, you never have to worry about whether your team or you have the latest information.

Within the collaborative workspace, our solution allows students to have a safe place to learn and to interact with others. Educators can control whether or not students are able to interact with everyone in the class or just those students on their teams. When assigned to teams, students can comment and share content freely with team members knowing the material will not be shared outside the team without their permission. Students are empowered to take risks and try new approaches to solving problems.

Our solution helps educators put in place a collaborative workspace that lets them employ a variety of teaching strategies to improve learning outcomes. With a few mouse clicks or swipes you can divide classes into different areas of focus, enabling students to work together on specific parts of a project that interests them. You can also selectively share content and applications so students with special needs have the opportunity to drill on areas that need improvement without others knowing. Our solution also helps educators easily assign students to teams for group-based learning.

Mobile Learning

We realize that learning isn't solely taking place inside the classroom. Therefore, our solution allows students to continue exploring a subject in the hallways, lunchrooms, and at home.

BYOD Option: Support for Student Choice

Through the Collaborative Workspace students and educators can take content and applications anywhere regardless of what device is being used. We know accidents happen, a device gets broken or forgotten and lost on the bus. With EXO U, you can get your students back up and running quickly with a new device.

The Collaborative Workspace automatically synchronizes content and applications with the EXO U Server. To continue working or learning, you or your student simply has to authorize the new device and install the Teacher Desk or Collaborative Workspace for that device. When you open the Teacher Desk or your students open the Collaborative Workspace everything is exactly as it was left it in the last session.

Simplified Management of 1:1 and BYOD Initiatives

  • A complete inventory of all district-owned assets
  • A list of all installed licensed content along with their version
  • A list of all educators and students along with their user information, including associated devices
  • Comprehensive device information, including type/model, hardware information such as MAC address or phone numbers, operating system and version, EXO U Collaborative Workspace version, last known location, last use, etc.

Protection of Development Investment

Using the Content Factory, you can easily build multi-platform lessons, or playlists, instead of just a lesson for one operating system. This approach safeguards your district's platform investments today and into the future. Because EXO U has direct integration with the device platform and operating system, you can develop, deliver, and manage innovative content without worrying whether it will appear differently on a different device or even work on next year's device. Administrators can rest easy knowing their custom applications and content isn't dependent upon update cycles to browsers or operating systems.

Content Management

With EXO U, you can offer your students digital content from publishers along side teaching material showcasing current events: live video feeds from news channels, Websites, and more. No longer will you be struggling to keep students engaged using textbooks that are seven to ten years old. Our versioning and auto-update system ensures both you and your students have instant access to any updates of the EXO U solution as well as your own applications and content regardless of whether they've accessed content from school supplied or personal devices.

We provide you with tools and templates you can use to create custom playlists for your classrooms. You simply drag and drop publisher content along side content created by you, other educators, and/or students. The Content Factory is private to your school district and provides full control over licensed content and applications and you the ability to develop custom lesson plans that work across multiple platforms and best suit the needs of your students. By deploying content through your school's private Content Store, you don't have to worry that your school is violating a publisher's agreement.

Centralized Content Store

We make it easy to test, approve, and share content through a centralized Content Store. Simply submit your content, specify any access restrictions, and viola it's available for administrators, peers, and students. Administrators and tenured educators can review proposed playlists of junior educators and peers and offer suggestions. As new versions of content come available, the EXO U versioning and auto-update system ensures your students have access to the most current information.

Content Available With or Without an Internet Connection

Unlike HTML5/browser only or Web-delivered content, the content you create with the Content Factory is available to students whether they're offline or online. They're able to take your lessons with them when they leave the classroom, continuing to learn without or without an Internet connection and giving them time to complete assignments at their own pace.

Security Issues

We give you:

  • A sandbox that separates publisher content and personal information
  • Encryption around homework and assessments within the Collaborative Workspace
  • SSL/HTTPS encryption between the Collaborative Workspace and the EXO U server
  • SSL/HTTPS encryption for communications between Collaborative Workspaces or between devices

We've built both the Teacher Desk and Collaborative Workspace as application containers, ensuring that publisher data and student data remain separate. The EXO U server is unaware of anything done by you outside the Teacher Desk or your students outside the Collaborative Workspace. EXO U ensures private data remains private and unavailable to school applications. With EXO U, administrators can take comfort knowing that policies apply exclusively to school data and applications installed in the Collaborative Workspace and all students have the same resources available to them.

When you use the Content Factory to develop playlists, you can rest easy knowing that students only have access to resources approved by the school or school district and that student responses to assignments or online assessments are secure. With EXO U:

  • All content and all data – both at rest and in motion – is encrypted.
  • Playlists within Collaborative Workspaces securely connect over the Internet to access resources and upload homework or assessment results. This encrypted connection secures answers in transit from being accessed as they transverse the Internet.
  • Plagiarism can be prevented through security policies. Administrators can disable copy and paste as well as save actions that might permit applications outside the Collaborative Workspace access to the information.

With EXO U, administrators can set policies per class, classroom, or educator that apply across the school as to who can access what materials. You can further restrict access within your classrooms.

Administrators are able to set up policies that specify what you can and cannot do with data and applications within the Teacher Desk and what your students can and cannot do with data and applications within their Collaborative Workspaces:

  • The frequency at which publisher content and applications are updated is determined by a content and application update policy.
  • The length of time content can be viewed and applications are functional before a connection to the Content Factory needs to be re-established ensures that rarely used devices are always in compliance.

Day to day, you can assign groups and specify what team members can and cannot do with team data within that workspace, including the prevention of copy-paste from within the Collaborative Workspace to files or applications outside it.

We provide integration with Active Directory to allow administrators to map privileges against the school directory. Only you and/or active substitutes have access to the Teacher Desk and it only contains information about students in your classes as well as age- or skills- appropriate licensed publisher content and applications. Additionally only currently enrolled students can access the Collaborative Workspace and educator-assigned content and applications even if on their own supplied devices.

  • User authentication to the Collaborative Workspace allows administrators to give rights to access different services and applications.
  • User authorization ensures educators and students have the resources and applications they need.
  • Secure browser and data sharing limits what content and resources students have when working in groups or taking online assessments.
